Inspection and Testing to BS60079-17
In view of the recent changes in legislation, embracing the increased needs for the certification and testing of Hazardous Area electrical installations, we now offer a comprehensive inspection, testing and certification service.
The service is particularly relevant to the requirements regarding periodic inspection and testing.
No electrical installation, no matter how carefully designed and erected, can be expected to last forever. Periodic inspection and testing is necessary due to a number of factors including wear, damage, corrosion, ageing and environmental influences. All of these factors will cause the installation to deteriorate. Periodic inspections aim to highlight these deteriorations before they affect the safety of the installation.
Consequently, periodic inspection and testing should be considered for the following reasons: - To maintain compliance with the ATEX regulations.
- To ensure the safety of the installation.
- To fulfil the duty of care of the site owner to all persons.
- To assess compliance with BS7671 & BS60079.
- To assess compliance with the Electricity Supply Regulations 1988.
- To assess compliance with the Electricity at Work Act 1989.
- Completion of alterations, or additions, to the original installation.
- Following a significant increase of the electrical loading of the installation.
- Where it is believed that damage may have been caused to the installation.
- When it is a requirement by insurance companies, public bodies, licensing authorities, mortgagors or landlords.
- Structural changes may have impaired the safety of the installation.
- Signs of overheating and overloading.
Inspection of Existing Equipment in Hazardous Areas
Part of the DSEAR regulations is to conduct an inspection of the existing equipment in hazardous areas, to confirm that it has been designed, constructed, installed, maintained and operated in such a way as to minimise the risk of an explosion.
This will be achieved by following the following procedure:- Inspect and list all the equipment in hazardous zones.
- Review maintenance records to highlight any problems.
- Conduct ignition hazard assessments of non-electrical equipment.
- Assess electrical equipment with respect to its certification.
- Record the findings.
- Implement any corrective action arising.
Types of Inspection:- Initial – It is necessary to check that the selected type of protection is appropriate for the hazardous area installation.
- Periodic – This is routine inspection and applies to existing installations. It is used to monitor the effects of deterioration or change. The intervals between periodic inspections should not exceed three years.
Methods of Inspection: Visual, Close and Detailed
Visual and close inspections do not require any equipment to be isolated, or any enclosures opened. A visual and close inspection may lead to the need for a detailed inspection.
Reports to the client may include an Inspection Report, Detailed Equipment Schedules showing any non compliance, and proving calculations for Intrinsically Safe Circuits.
We are approved by the NICEIC for inspection and testing of installations to the IEE Wiring Regulations, BS7671. WUCS is also approved by the NICEIC for the preparation, installation, inspection, testing and maintenance of electrical installations for water and sewage treatment facilities.
